"It is a joy to listen to Smooth Jazz guitarist Öcsi Baranyi's lyrical lines, singing, repertoire and musical inventiveness. The innate Hungarian's charm and playfulness come through in his music, giving his style of smooth jazz playing and singing a live music style that many in the genre lack.

Öcsi Baranyi was born in a town called Arad in Transylvania. He started playing violin when he was age 6; cello at age 8 and at 10 began playing piano. And, at age 13, he then began playing the guitar.

Although his parents and his teachers had spent so much time (and money) in teaching him so many instruments, they were reluctant for him to learn guitar and did not encourage him through his journey. In his quest to master that instrument, Öcsi was on his own.

And yet, none brought him as much joy, fun and satisfaction as his guitar. He took occasional student summer jobs so that he could buy himself his first Reghin acoustic guitar.

With his first teacher Calin Ungureanu, he learned to play simple chords and he experimented and listened with one ear glued to the radio. But, eventually, after a while, that music was too simple and sought a more sophisticated chord that was close to Jazz and Bossa.  He then began to study with a new teacher, Jenci Bauer who taught him the essence of complicated Latino Jazz chords.

And now, even though Osci has found his own chords, sounds and styles, he still reverts at times to what he learned under Jenci Bauer’s teachings.

At age 20, Öcsi became a professional bass and vocalist in the bands of Ady Serban, later Depold, Wicky Frank with Gigant and Red and Black (Rosu si Negru).

Öcsi Baranyi has performed on some rather formidable stages including: Mamaia, Flora, Melody Bar, (5 years), Casino Constanta, Atlantic Bucuresti, Sala Palatului, various venues in Stockholm, Theater Arad, Astoria, Grand Hotel Fasano, Sicilia, Maldives, Gasteig München, Kurhaus Baden-Baden, Stahlbad Baden-Baden, Mercur, Aqua Aurelia, etc.

Osci’s greatest influencers for whom he has great admiration and respect and to whom he expresses many thanks are the great musicians and friends like: Carlos Santana, Tamás Gábór, Ede Balogh, Attila Ronto, Roland Balogh, Zoltan Balogh, Ovidiu Madius, Jenci Bauer, Nansi Brandes, Ady Serban, Wicky Frank, Depold, and Calin Ungureanu.

His favorite groups initially were The Beatles, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Chicago and the Brazilian Bossanovas, such as Jobin, Gilbert and De Souza, Joao Gilbert,...

From the mid 70's he became influenced by Al Jarreau, Benson, Sting, De Lucia, Di Meola, Nelson Faria,  big bands with Bubblé, Rod Stewart with Old American song book only, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample, Marc Antoine, Chris Botti among others..

If you do like Osci’s soft music and smooth jazz style, please do not hesitate to contact him. He will be very pleased to play for you, no matter if it is a party, a special event or a concert".
